In a recent report published by Swrve, a very small amount of mobile gamers (.15%) are bringing in approximately 50% of game revenue for mobile gaming companies. (1) What does this mean?
There are a handful of addicted gamers that significantly fund the industry. This isn’t a new concept necessarily, but with the increased use of mobile games, this statistic is pretty shocking nonetheless. These people are likely suffering personally and financially and are struggling with gaming addiction with little guidance or support. While this happens, the gaming industry is stuffing their pockets, benefiting from the addictive tendencies that these gamers have.
Are you a gamer that has been sucked into the realm of paying to feed your game obsession? Traditional video games can be addicting, of course, but paying continuous amounts of cash to play is relatively unlikely. Mobile games are a different story, though. Many of these games are free in the beginning. They’re free for a while – enough to get you hooked – then once you’re obsessed with it, you have to start giving up your hard earned cash to continue playing. Game companies don’t particularly care about your time or your money – they are after both. And more often than not, people who don’t have the money to spend are the ones that are paying for these games and getting wrapped into a continuous web of gaming destruction.
